About Lary

Lary is a competition level performance piper who will perform appropriately dressed for your event and properly tuned. He can perform in full formal highland attire or renaissance dress. Lary wears the Texas Bluebonnet Tartan (contains all the colors of the Texas Bluebonnet flower) ,the Clan MacMillan Ancient Dress Tartan (a rare two color tartan of Red and Yellow) or the Royal Stewart Tartan ( the familiar Red, White, Blue and Yellow.)

Lary wears the Texas Bluebonnet because of his adopted home state of Texas. The Clan MacMillan is one of 28 ancestral connections he has with the Auld Sod dating to the 1200's. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Pipes and Drums are the band that inspired Lary to begin piping. The Scots Dragoon Guards were authorized to wear the Royal Stewart by King George VI.

Like a number of his generation, Lary graduated from high school May 30, 1965 and June 21, 1965 he was in US Army boot camp at Fort Polk, La. After basic training he was assigned to the 60th Army Band at Fort Polk where he played clarinet and saxophone. In 1969 he enrolled at Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma as an Instrumental Music Major.

After recovering from a broken neck in a motorcycle wreck in 2000 Lary chose to follow through on his dream to become a piper. He rode his Harley to Houston, Tx., a four hour trip one way, twice a month for two years to establish a foundation to build a bagpiping career. Lary still receives instruction on the bagpipes from world champion pipers to continue to improve his piping skills.

Short Notice Service

Lary's home is south of Fort Worth, Texas and he is ready to travel on little notice. It is one hour to Waco, Texas from his home. He was contacted by a family member an hour and a half prior to the graveside service and made it there on time. On another occasion he was called four hours before the service which was three hours away and made it on time. Consumed, the title of his first CD describes his desire and commitment to the bagpipes and those having a desire to hear the Great Highland Bagpipe from the Highlands of Scotland.

Lary's Travels

Lary has piped from the Western Caribbean in the South, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the North, El Paso, Texas in the West, to the Highlands of Scotland in the East. Most of his piping is within 400 miles of the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex but he is willing to travel with the proper arrangements.

Pick Any Tune

The three most requested bagpipe tunes are Amazing Grace, Scotland the Brave and Danny Boy, all tunes Lary loves to play. Along with a long list of traditional Scots/Irish tunes his tune list includes The Marine Corps Hymn, America the Beautiful and less traditional tunes like The Flintstones, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Henry the VIII, Dixie, The Eyes of Texas and The Texas Aggie War Hymn. This is not a complete tune list but a list that shows Lary's diversity on the pipes.
